Burnell Briercliffe Architects were appointed to design a new community building for the semi-rural villages of Kiveton and Wales, to replace an existing hall that was always in high demand but which had become structurally unsound. Priorities in the brief included spaces for indoor sports and entertainment facilities, a children's play area and coffee shop. A double-height, south lit atrium, with seating for the cafe and space for exhibitions, forms the hub of an open, colourful and welcoming new building. A variety of contrasting materials and neat detailing ensure the building sits respectfully amongst its surroundings while still looking contemporary. Photovoltaic panels integrated into the roof, careful use of daylight, a groundsource heat pump and rainwater harvesting will limit the building's running costs and environmental impact.
