The Hallam City Learning Centre for Notre Dame High School presented an enjoyably complex design challenge. A tight budget and conservation issues (the site is in a Scheduled Historic Garden within the curtilage of a Grade 2 Listed Building in a Conservation Area) made every single detail critical. From the outset we wanted to create a bright and lively space full of unexpected views and links. All activities such as the cyber cafe, computer suite, conference room, gym and changing rooms are accessed from a semicircular internal courtyard area where children's artwork is displayed. The gym and informal teaching area in the cyber cafe have large areas of glazing giving views to the internal courtyard and the beautiful landscaped surroundings. In the adjacent rose garden we worked with local artists to plan a piece of art which the school children helped create.
