Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall. Sector: Community. Value: £1.1m. Client: The Trustees of Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall. This project developed from a desire to replace the well-used but unsound former village hall with an exemplary community building in terms of both sustainability and accessibility. The South-facing roof slopes incorporate photovoltaic roofing tiles (a meter in the hall gives a continuous read-out of electricity production as an educational device). Heating is provided by a ground-source heat pump and WCs are flushed by rainwater stored in an underground tank. The building was designed to make best use of passive technologies, with a high central atrium and electrically controlled roof-lights to provide ventilation and cooling as well as bringing natural light deep into the building. The building is fully DDA-compliant, and won the following awards: 2008 Community Award (South Yorkshire Clean Air Campaign); 2008 Environment Award (Barnsley Business Award).
